Nasal Swab Instructions

Before starting, ensure you have the proper supplies, such as the respiratory test kit, including a sterile swab, a collection tube or bag, and any necessary documentation.
Here is a list of instructions to guide a patient through the process of collecting an anterior nares (nasal) specimen for a respiratory test:
  1. Wash your hands: Begin by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Dry your hands with a clean towel or paper towel.
  2. Prepare your space: Choose a well-lit, clean area to perform the test. Lay out all the materials you need within easy reach.
  3. Read the instructions: Carefully read and follow the instructions provided with your respiratory test kit. Make sure you understand the steps before proceeding.
  4. Open the swab package: Carefully open the swab package, making sure not to touch the tip of the swab with your fingers or any other surfaces. This will help maintain its sterility.
  5. Position yourself: Stand or sit comfortably, with your head level and facing forward. Gently tilt your head back slightly.
  6. Hold the swab: Hold the swab by the handle, with the tip facing away from your hand.
  7. Locate your nostril: Identify the nostril you will swab first. You will be inserting the swab approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch (1 to 2 centimeters) into your nostril.
  8. Insert the swab: Gently insert the swab into your nostril, parallel to the floor. Avoid pointing the swab upward, as this may cause discomfort.
  9. Rotate the swab: Once the swab is inserted, gently rotate it in a circular motion around the inside of your nostril for at least 5 seconds. Make sure to maintain contact with the inner walls of your nostril.
  10. Repeat for the other nostril: Carefully remove the swab from the first nostril and repeat steps 7-9 with the same swab in your other nostril.
  11. Place the swab in the collection tube/bag: Once you have swabbed both nostrils, insert the swab into the collection tube or bag, following the specific instructions provided with your test kit. This may include snapping off the handle or sealing the tube or bag.
  12. Seal and label the sample: Ensure the sample is sealed properly and labeled with your information as instructed by your test kit.
  13. Dispose of any waste: Discard any waste materials, such as used tissues or swab packaging, in a trash receptacle.
  14. Wash your hands: Thoroughly wash your hands again with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  15. Store or send the sample: Follow the instructions provided with your test kit to store the sample or send it to the designated laboratory for analysis. This may involve placing it in a refrigerator, mailing it in a provided envelope, or dropping it off at a specified location.
Remember to consult the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or test kit manufacturer for any additional or specific steps that may be required.
